Mehsana, December 11: Isn’t there no good time to listen to folk music, right? We grab our phone, search for our favourite singer playlist and hop onto the nostalgia of the songs. How about you play the songs of Smita Makwana from aapnu Gujarat? Her melodious voice will fresh up your mood for sure, and you will head back again to listen to it.

One can easily listen to Smita Makwana’s songs on platforms such as YouTube and Spotify. Smita is a Gujarati folk singer born in the Mehsana district of Gujarat. She first sang bhajans in school when she was 13 years old. Little did she know, Smita banked upon her singing journey in school. Professionally, Smita sang a song in the marriage function in 2003 in which she earned her first income of 100 rupees. She then was picked up by a group to sing professionally.

Let’s check out the nostalgic songs sung by Smita in recent years:

    • Maa taaru naam layine aagadh vadhu – This song was released in 2019 and has hit almost 5 million views on YouTube.
    • Sacho prem – Shak khoto na kar
    • Ramzat amari ramo tame
    • Ambemani chundadi
    • Ramzat part 1 – 2 -3

Smita Makwana has recorded 35 albums to date, a significant achievement for a singer who started from nowhere. Smita says that ‘I am the first person from my family who stepped into the music industry, my family has been the back support throughout my career in Gujarati folk singing’. She is bestowed with awards such as the ‘Best Singer’ Award by Live Crime News, another award from Shivshakti Musical Group, and appreciation trophies from programs held in the Mehsana district.

Smita’s earlier memory of singing was seeing the Navratri singers performing and cheering in Garba functions in her locality. She used to cheer enthusiastically for the duos or individuals singing Garba songs when she was a kid. Mr. Kishanbhai Makwana, Smita’s father, has been a massive supporter in her life.  From the day she decided to become a singer, he had supported Smita in every step of her music career. Smith doesn’t have anyone in her family who is in the music industry, she chose this career as a challenge, and presently she is appreciated for her passion and dedication. Young girls living in her locality, are taking motivation from Smita’s life to fight for their dreams. What’s better than women motivating women, right?
